# Comments, mentions & threads

Comments are how participants discuss specific parts of a room without leaving for email. Comments live inside **threads** — each thread groups a conversation around the same context (a section, a general topic, an action).

## Threads — the unit of conversation

Every comment belongs to a **thread**. Threads keep related comments together and can be:

- **Tied to a section** — one thread per section, automatic
- **Tied to an action** — one thread per step / task / subtask, automatic (lives inside the action's details sidepanel)
- **General / free-floating** — created on demand from the bottom-right entry point, when you want to discuss something that doesn't belong to a single section or action (e.g. a question about pricing across the room, an internal heads-up, a buyer-side strategic note)

Each thread has an **editable title** so anyone joining the conversation gets context fast — rename it from the thread itself.

## The three entry points

### 1. Per-section comment — hover icon on the left
1. Hover any **section**.
2. A **comment icon** appears on the **left side** of the section.
3. Click it → the section's thread opens (or a new one is created if it's the first comment).
4. Write your comment and post.

This is the right entry for *"I have a question about this specific section."*

### 2. General comments — bottom-right panel
1. Click the **comments icon** in the **bottom right** of the room.
2. The **All comments panel** opens, listing every thread in the room (section threads, action threads, general threads).
3. To start a new general thread, use the **New thread** action and give it a title.
4. Write your comment and post.

This is the right entry for *"I want to start a discussion that doesn't belong to a single section"* — or to browse all room conversations from one place.

### 3. Inside an action — step / task / subtask sidepanel
Open any step, task, or subtask. Its **details sidepanel** has a built-in comment thread on the right column. See [Steps widget — Action details sidepanel](https://katalyz.crisp.help/en/article/steps-widget-jd7fe5/) for the full sidepanel features (including attaching emails to the thread).

This is the right entry for *"I have a question about this specific task or step."*

## Reply, edit, delete

- **Reply** — click a thread → write a reply. Replies nest under the parent comment.
- **Edit** — you can edit comments you authored. You can't edit anyone else's.
- **Delete** — same rule: only your own.

## Mentioning someone

Type `@` and start typing a name. Pick from the autocomplete list.

Mentions notify the tagged person (email + in-app, per their notification settings).

**Good uses:**
- `@Sarah can you clarify the pricing here?`
- `@Legal would love your take on the MSA section`
- `@buyer-champion thoughts on this timeline?`

### Restricting a comment to mentioned people only

When a comment **@-mentions** at least one person, a checkbox appears in the input — **"Visible only to mentioned people"**. Check it and only the mentioned users (plus org members) see the comment and get notified. Useful for side-bar discussions in an otherwise open room. See [Controlling visibility](https://katalyz.crisp.help/en/article/controlling-visibility-pages-sections-actions-messages-guidelines-vc7vb1/).

## Who can comment

Everyone with access to the room can comment, regardless of room role (Owner, Editor, Viewer) and regardless of whether they're an org member or an external participant. Comments are part of the collaborative experience, not an editor-only feature.

## Notifications

By default:
- You're notified when **@-mentioned**
- You're notified of replies in threads **you posted in**
- The Owner is notified of every comment on the room (per [Room roles](https://katalyz.crisp.help/en/article/room-roles-owner-editor-viewer-1n8iz04/))
- **Action assignees** are notified of every comment posted in the thread of an action they're assigned to (step / task / subtask) — so the people doing the work always see the discussion attached to it

See [Notification preferences](https://katalyz.crisp.help/en/article/notification-preferences-1mglop1/) for what each user can tune individually, and [Notification sender email](https://katalyz.crisp.help/en/article/notification-sender-email-domain-per-user-setup-w47mjv/) for the workspace-level configuration of the sender address (subdomain on every plan; per-user addresses on Premium).
