# Placeholder widget

The **Placeholder** widget is a visual "add something here" slot. Drop it in where content is coming later — a video from the next meeting, a document your buyer will send, a contact they still need to introduce.

It's not empty space. It's an **invitation to contribute** — framed and visible, with clear instructions for what should fill it.

## How to add

1. On the **floating build bar** at the bottom of the editor, open the **⌄ All widgets** popover and locate **Placeholder**.
2. Drag it onto your page.
3. A popover opens asking what kind of placeholder.
4. Pick a type and (optionally) customize the label.
5. Save.

## The selection pill — Placeholder controls

Click the placeholder to select it. Left to right:

1. **Edit resource** (sliders icon) — reopens the placeholder's configuration (type, custom title, custom subtitle).
2. **Design** (paintbrush icon) — opens the contextual Design panel.
3. **⋮ More** — Edit resource (same as the sliders icon) · **Duplicate** · **Delete**.

## Placeholder types

Pick the type matching the widget that will eventually replace the placeholder. The available types map 1:1 to the widget catalog:

- **Text**
- **Step**
- **Timeline**
- **Field**
- **Document**
- **Video**
- **Contact**
- **Link**
- **CTA**
- **Image**
- **Ticker**
- **Recording**
- **Meeting**
- **Spacer**

Each type sets a sensible default title and subtitle (e.g. "Add a video", "Share a recording or demo"). You can override both with **Custom title** and **Custom subtitle** inputs in the same popover to fit your specific context.

## When to use

### Rooms built collaboratively
You're building a room while still gathering materials. A Placeholder holds space and signals to teammates (or your buyer) what's coming.

### Templates with intentional gaps
Build a template where some widgets are deliberately left for each deal to fill in — *"Add your kickoff recording here"*, *"Link the signed MSA here"*.

### Buyer-collaborative rooms
For rooms where the buyer is expected to contribute — *"Add your procurement contact"*, *"Upload your vendor onboarding form"* — a placeholder makes the ask visible.

### Phased deal progression
Early-stage, the proposal section is empty but has a **Placeholder** (*"Final proposal to be added after the discovery call"*). Later, you replace it with the real content.

## Filling a placeholder — clicking it triggers the matching widget's add flow

When you (or anyone with edit access) is ready to replace the placeholder with real content, just **click it**. Katalyz triggers the **add flow of the matching widget type** in place. For example:

- Click a **Document** placeholder → the document picker / upload popup opens
- Click a **Video** placeholder → the video URL / upload popup opens
- Click a **Meeting** placeholder → the calendar picker opens
- Click a **Contact** placeholder → the contact picker opens
- …and so on for every other type

Once you complete the flow, the placeholder is **replaced** by the real widget — same position, same surrounding context, no manual swap. Faster than "delete placeholder + add widget from scratch", and the placeholder's intent is preserved end-to-end.

## Different from an empty section

Compared to just leaving a section bare:

- **Placeholder** — visible prompt, communicates intent
- **Empty section** — looks like something's broken or unfinished

Always use a placeholder (or hide the section) rather than leave blank space.
