# Removing a member

When someone leaves the company or no longer needs Katalyz access, remove them from the workspace. Done right, this is a clean handoff with no lost work.

> ⚠️ Requires org role **Admin**.

## Before you remove someone

Think about what they **own** before pressing delete.

A member might be the **Owner** of active rooms. If you remove them without reassigning ownership, those rooms lose their primary owner — they won't be deleted, but access and responsibility get murky.

**Recommended pre-removal checklist:**

1. Go to **Settings → Members** and click the member's row to see how many **rooms** they own (shown in the Rooms column).
2. If they own rooms you care about:
   - Open each room.
   - In **Participants**, assign another Admin or Pro as **Owner**.
   - Optionally, update any automations, CRM links, or booking references that pointed to the departing person.
3. Download the signed PDFs of any **completed Signature envelopes** where they were the creator — for your records.

## Remove a member

### Option 1 — From the edit modal
1. Go to **Settings → Members**.
2. Click the member's row.
3. In the edit modal, click **Delete** (bottom-left, destructive button).
4. Confirm.

### Option 2 — Bulk removal
1. Go to **Settings → Members**.
2. Check the boxes next to each person to remove.
3. In the bulk action bar at the bottom, click **Delete**.
4. Confirm.

## What happens when someone is removed

- They **lose access to Katalyz immediately** — their next page load will boot them to a logged-out state
- They **cannot log back in** — their magic-link email address is deactivated
- **Rooms they owned** remain in the workspace but show the owner as deactivated
- **Room roles they held** in other people's rooms are severed
- **Tasks they were assigned to** remain but show the former assignee; you can reassign them
- **Comments they posted** stay with their name attached (but greyed/inactive)
- **Signatures they collected or sent** remain in the audit trail — these are legal records and are never deleted

Removal is **permanent**. To re-add the person, you'd invite them as a new member.

## Billing

Removing a member **has no direct impact on your invoice**. Billing is based on the **paid-seat quota** provisioned on your workspace (Admin + Pro), not on how many of those seats are currently filled. Removing a member frees the seat for re-use within the same quota — your bill stays the same.

To actually lower (or raise) the quota itself, see [Adding or removing seats](→ 07-plans-billing/02-seats-billing/01-adding-removing-seats).

## Removing yourself

You can't remove yourself while you're the only Admin. Promote another member to Admin first, then ask them to remove you.
